Business Pulse plans the year and reviews it with you

Peter Allen builds a budget for the year with you: takings, gross profit on food and drink, the wage bill and cash. Every quarter or every month your management accounts are set against it, the cash flow forecast is rolled forward, and you meet Peter to decide what to change.

Questions from hospitality owners

Where do you work?

We work with restaurants, cafés, pubs, bars and hotels across the UK by phone and video call, with the books kept in Xero, and clients near Ballymena can meet us at our office there. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland set their own business rates, and our Northern Ireland page sets out the rates and rules there.

Can you connect our till to Xero?

Yes. We set up the till's daily sales summary to post into Xero, split by VAT rate and by payment type. Card settlements then match the bank, and the VAT return is built from the same figures.

Who runs Business Pulse?

Peter Allen, co-founder and Finance Director of Buzz, who has more than 20 years' experience as an accountant. He builds the plan for the year with you and meets you each quarter, or each month on the monthly plan, to go through the figures.

Do tips count towards the minimum wage?

No. GOV.UK states that tips, gratuities, service charges and cover charges do not count towards minimum wage pay, including when a troncmaster pays them out. Every worker has to be paid at least the minimum wage before tips.

Is retail, hospitality and leisure relief still available?

The 40% relief for 2025/26 ended on 31 March 2026. From 1 April 2026 a qualifying hospitality property in England pays a lower multiplier: 38.2p in the pound with a rateable value below £51,000, and 43.0p above it.

How much do your accounts cost?

Accounts, tax, bookkeeping and VAT returns are set by turnover: £149 up to £250,000, £199 up to £500,000, £299 up to £1 million, £449 up to £2 million, all + VAT a month. Over £2 million is priced for the business. Each extra venue adds £95 a month. Setting up a tronc scheme costs £350 + VAT, and running it £75 + VAT a month. Payroll is £8 a person a month paid monthly, or £12 paid weekly or fortnightly, with a minimum of £25 a month and a £75 setup fee. Running the workplace pension adds £2 a person a month, with a £150 setup fee.
